“To consecrate and sanctify our comradeship by our devotion to mutual helpfulness.” This is the last sentence in the Preamble to our American Legion Constitution, and it creates a duty for American Legion veterans to help veterans. Terry Fisher Post 117 in Rockwall, Texas, conscious of this duty, collaborated with a caring dental practice to provide free dental care to Rockwall County veterans. The post planned, organized and publicized the event — D-Day (Dental Day) for V-Day (Veterans Day).
D-Day for V-Day, held in conjunction with Veterans Day, is in its second year. Lowrance Dental’s dentists, dental technicians and hygienists provided free exams, cleaning and first-line dental procedures to 77 deserving veterans on Nov. 9. The total donated effort amounted to more than $31,000, but more importantly, D-Day closed a medical coverage gap allowing needy veterans to obtain very expensive dental care at no cost.
Mark Kipphut, Post 117’s commander, said “this is how we thank veterans for their service.”
