My Name is Arlie G. Mummy Jr., known then mostly as Gordy Mummy. I was a center fielder on the Riverside County American Legion team and the All-Star Team for Area 5 in 1951.
I'm submitting this history since I am 90 now and have been trying to get my All-Star Team picture after being selected on that team for Area 5 from Riverside County as a center fielder, played in both All-Star games and was scouted by the Pittsburgh Pirates.
I was most likely the smallest player on the Area 5 team, since I was only 5-feet-6-inches tall and 16, so after two
letters discussing my possibilities with the scout, he told me that I needed to grow some, but he would keep in touch. I had no trouble hitting against either team we played, since I had batted 455 in 21 games as our school won the Riverside League Championship for the first time that season.
The sixth annual American Legion Baseball Tournament, to be played at Anaheim's La Palma Park in California, started Aug. 5, 1951.
The tournament consisted of 49 teams from Southern California and as far north as Santa Maria, Calif.
Area 5 teams were from Riverside, San Bernardino, Orange and San Diego counties, while Area 4 teams were from Los Angeles, Ventura, and Santa Barbara counties.
An All-Star Team selected from Area 5, and an All-Star Team selected from Area 4, played an elimination game at La Palma Park on Aug. 19. Area 5 defeated Area 4, 5-3.
Area 5 then was scheduled to play the Fighting Bob Post on Aug. 21, 1951, at La Palma Park.
San Diego defeated Area 5 All-Stars 8-4.
