Lackland AFB in August 1963 was a bit hot, around 100 degrees in the morning as we lined up for calisthenics at 7 a.m. after breakfast. I was from South Florida, so I was used to summer heat. We were starting to run on a track, and I was a good runner so I led the pack. Weighing 120 in my fatigues and boots, I actually lost a bit of weight due to the sweat and strain.
However, they fed us so good three times a day, and with regular exercise, I was able to go up 10 lbs in the few weeks
at Lackland. School was easy for me, and I grew very strong and fit in six weeks. Soon I was ready to go to Chanute for weather school, but that's another story for sure.
