SAN ANTONIO – (Nov. 11, 2025) – Legionnaires, veterans, members of the Divine Nine, family members and elected officials gathered at Fred Brock American Legion Post 828 to honor all who served in the U.S. Armed Forces on Veterans Day.
Annually, Post 828 hosts a ceremony to honor those who served and are continuing to serve in the greatest military force in the world.
This year, the keynote speaker was Texas State Rep. Barbara Gervin-Hawkins, District 120.
“I am honored to be with you all this morning for serval reasons. One of which is that we are at a pivotal time in our country,” said Gervin-Hawkins to approximately 150 attendees. “I believe that we as Americans must be actively involved in the changes we need.”
Throughout her remarks, she stressed the importance of voting.
“Our forefathers died to give us the opportunity to vote; your vote is your voice,” said Gervin-Hawkins. “We are in difficult times. Breaking news, America is in trouble and democracy is truly on the line. It’s real!”
After presenting Gervin-Hawkins with a token of appreciation, Post Commander Amanda Parham presented Past Commander Garnel Alford with the post’s Legacy Award. Alford, a retired U.S. Air Force veteran, served as District 20 commander and Department of Texas historian.
Special thanks to Mojo Consultants and Delta Rho Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., for sponsoring the ceremony.
Later in the evening, Post 828 hosted its annual Junior Non-Commissioned Officers Reception in support of Celebrate America’s Military (CAM). Launched by the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce in 1970, CAM is the largest and longest-running series honoring military servicemembers, veterans and their families in San Antonio, also known as Military City USA.
Presented by Mojo Consultants, the event treated guests to complimentary BBQ dinners and a live performance by Europa.
Due to the federal government shutdown, the Greater San Antonio Chamber of Commerce decided to cancel its signature events, the Spirit of America Dinner, Veterans Legacy Luncheon and Senior Non-Commissioned Officer (SNCO) Reception.
Fred Brock Post 828’s mission is to enhance the well-being of San Antonio’s Veterans, their families, the military and the community by its devotion to mutual helpfulness.
