AUSTIN, Texas – (July 11, 2026) – Burrell Parmer, a past commander of Fred Brock American Legion Post 828 in San Antonio, was presented with national media awards for news writing for department/district and post levels from Department Commander Richard Huntley at the 107th Annual Convention of the American Legion Department of Texas, held at the Renaissance Austin Hotel.

Parmer, a retired U.S. Marine Corps public affairs officer, serves as the department’s Marketing, Media & Communications Committee.

The American Legion Media & Communications Contest is open to all current members of the American Legion Family (Legionnaires, Sons of The American Legion, Auxiliary and Legion Riders). It recognizes the communication efforts Legion Family members do at the post, district and department levels to promote the good of the organization.

The contest has seven categories for submissions: websites, publications, visual media, social media, editorial/news writing, editorial/informational writing and public relations/community outreach.

Since its founding in 1919, The American Legion has been a key advocate for veterans’ benefits, children and youth, patriotic American values, a strong national defense, and quality-of-life issues for those serving in today’s armed forces.
