The Hammondsport American Legion held its annual Memorial Day services on May 25, 2026, starting at the Veteran’s Honor Roll Memorial in the town square. Army veteran Jim Nichiporuk placed the wreath at the memorial. This was followed by a small parade to Main Street Cemetery.
Post 407 Commander JP Oliver and Army veteran David Trubic rode in the Army Jeep to the cemetery. Oliver led the services by welcoming the community and guests. Chaplain Christopher Reneau led the services with a prayer, and the Scouts did a reading of “In Flanders Field.” This year we had special guest speaker Richard Little, the great-grand-nephew of Roswell McDaniel (Post 407's namesake). He read the last letter Roswell wrote home and the letter sent home announcing his death in World War I, as well as the touching poem written by Roswell’s brother. We also shared some history about Pvt. McDaniels that was prepared by local author, historian and veteran Robert Yott.
The Hammondsport Central School High School Band then played patriotic songs, Trubic laid the wreath at the cemetery, and the Legion color guard did a salute.
The ceremony was concluded with the band sounding taps. After concluding the services, the community was invited to Post 407 for light refreshments.
The Hammondsport American Legion thanks the members, community and guests for helping and attending the annual Memorial Day services.
