On Aug. 18, 2026, members of Lewis L. Millett American Legion Post 38, South Korea, attended the Barrett-Bonifas Memorial ceremony held by the United Nations Command Security Battalion-Joint Security Area in Camp Bonifas. Legionnaires Mike Napsey (Alt. Dept. NEC, Post 38 Adjutant/Finance Officer), Steve Tharp (Post 38 Service Office/Judge Advocate) and Daniel Pinkston joined soldiers, veterans and officials in the Korean Demilitarized Zone honoring Maj. Arthur Bonifas of Newburgh, N.Y., the Joint Security Force company commander, and 1st Lt. Mark Barrett of Columbia, S.C., the 1st platoon leader - who were brutally axed to death during a routine tree-trimming operation near the Bridge of No Return 49 years ago. The incident is known as the “1976 axe murder incident.” Post 38 provided a wreath for the memorial ceremony. Napsey also represented as commander of VFW District 3 Korea.
