Right thing to do

Decatur, IL

One fall when I was 8 or 9, my father (b. 1893) was raking leaves. I came running around the corner of the house and saw him standing at attention facing east. I asked him what he was doing. He just stood still for a little while longer. Then he turned to me and explained it was Armistice Day. At 11 o'clock on Nov. 11, World War I ended. He was honoring and showing respect for all the men who had served overseas during World Wars I and II.

His actions really impressed me because he had been all alone and still took the time to do the right thing, even though there had been no one there to see him doing it.
