John J. Morris Post 62 creates Compassion Committee for visitng homebound veterans

Peoria, AZ

On Jan. 4, John J. Morris Post 62 (Peoria, Ariz.) made their first visit to a local homebound veteran. The Compassion Committee was created to make these visits. Service Officer Chuck Holsinger was contacted by a resident's daughter asking if someone could come visit her dad. Chuck reached out to the publicity and community outreach team and following discussion, the new Compassion Committee was created. Gary Lavarr and Terry Schovon have been part of the team that visits care centers monthly. They immediately wanted to be part of the first compassion visit. Army veteran Dwayne Fowler of the 1st Cavalry, who did four tours in Vietnam, was the recipient of the first visit. An hourlong visit seemed to go in a few minutes of great discussion. Chuck presented Mr. Fowler with a necklace with Army insignia on it. Everyone is looking forward to more visits and returning to see Mr. Fowler. All four veterans from Post 62 left walking on air over such a great visit.

Mr. Fowler was surprised and touched by the presentation of the Army necklace.
