Army veteran/Legionnaire raises funds for local military food program

Milwaukie, OR

Milwaukie Post 180 of The American Legion is proud to highlight the service and dedication of one of its own, Sharon Flaherty, U.S. Army veteran and honorary lifetime member of the post, for her recent efforts raising funds for the American Military Encouragement Network (AMEN).

Sharon, a former second vice commander and current lounge manager at Post 180, spent the day in front of the Grocery Outlet at 878 Molalla Ave. in Oregon City collecting donations to support AMEN’s mission. AMEN provides monthly meal boxes to military families, veterans in need and community members facing food insecurity. The nonprofit operates entirely on volunteer support and receives no government funding. A donation of just $45 fills a box with nutritious food for a family.

“With recent federal cuts to food assistance programs, the need for grassroots efforts like AMEN has grown significantly,” said Chad Derrington, first vice commander and acting adjutant of Post 180. “We’re proud of Sharon’s continued commitment to veterans and our local community.”

Milwaukie Post 180 regularly supports AMEN and other veteran-focused initiatives throughout Clackamas County. The post is committed to serving those who served and partnering with organizations that make a real impact.
