When the Post 109 commander was approached by a local high schooler named Haley who had an idea to raise funds and awareness for female veterans, the post was eager to assist. Haley had recently finished her Winter Guard program, where the theme was female veterans coming back to civilian life. The guard members had spoken to veterans, some not much older than themselves; all were so moved by the experiences, they cried after each performance. Haley wanted to do a fundraiser called Music Heals, an outdoor event with music, vendors and food to raise money and awareness for the unique issues our female veterans face coming home. Post 109 agreed and offered to help, giving her our venue with its great lawn and any other assistance needed. The Borough of Rutherford had made official proclamation in June recognizing Female Veterans Day. The event was held on Oct. 5, a beautiful day for a large free lawn party! Food, entertainment and holistic vendors donating time and services. Post 109 also set up a table for Be the One. Neighbors, council members and other nonprofits came by for support, and the Auxiliary, Sons and Scouts assisted.
The rollup of donations from cash, goods, services and labor was over $5,000 for the four-hour event. Some of the cash will be presented to Be the One, while the other portion will go to a local nonprofit specializing in female veterans transitioning to civilian life.
Not bad for a 17-year-old young woman with a heart, an idea and a love for veterans.
