John J. Morris Post 62 honors Memorial Day

Peoria, AZ

On May 26, John J. Morris Post 62 (Peoria, Ariz.) honored Memorial Day. The Riders started at the local cemetery with a large event. Then at 11 am, the Riders rolled into Post 62 to kick off the event at the post. Hundreds of people were in attendance. The honor guard came out and took position by the flagpole. A guest gentleman sang the national anthem, followed by another guest who led everyone in the Pledge of Allegiance. The chaplain led an opening prayer, followed by a welcome from the post commander. The honor guard proceeded with a 21-gun salute and then bugler sounded taps as the flag was lowered to half-mast. The commander gave a speech on Memorial Day, followed by the president of the Auxiliary, followed by the SAL and concluding with the Riders director. The chaplain then gave the closing prayer followed by everyone going inside the building, away from the heat, while singing "God Bless America." Once inside everyone enjoyed a huge potluck with the post providing hamburgers, hot dogs and chicken. The afternoon kicked off with music from the favorite local band, while another team went to an assisted living center to present poppies to veterans and everyone visited and told stories for about an hour. The center even brought out snacks for everyone. Proper respect was paid all day long to those who gave all.
