SAN ANTONIO – (Aug. 1, 2025) – Members of the Fred Brock American Legion Post 828 family, joined by numerous organizations and volunteers, supported the 20th Annual Back-to-School Jamboree hosted by the Claude W. Black Center Advisory Board in cooperation with District 2 City Council, H-E-B and Dreambuilders of Texas Charitable Foundation at the Claude W. Black Community Center.
More than 600 supply-filled backpacks were distributed to children from the city’s East Side. Additionally, the children and their parents/guardians were treated to a hotdog luncheon.
Vendors provided free resource information, while the Prince Hall Shriners of Moussa Temple No. 106 conducted voter registration and education for adults.
Essence Pereira, a mother of three, was thankful to the advisory board and its supporters.
“I am very thankful for the assistance, especially at a time like this with the economy,” said Pereira, a full-time student at Southeastern Oklahoma State University. “This provides families with a head start on gathering required school supplies.”
The Back-to-School Jamboree, along with other events hosted throughout the year, is the Claude W. Black Center Advisory Board’s way of accomplishing its mission of enhancing life, one family at a time.
“Our post is dedicated to helping the youth in our community,” said newly elected Post Commander Amanda Parham. “Our youth need all the tools available to have a proper education. Ensuring that they have the basic supplies is one of those tools.”
According to Advisory Board President Tavarus Glover, coming to together as a community is what it is all about.
“This type of activity demonstrates our community’s resolve in being a village and looking out for the best interest of our youth, said Glover, a member of Post 828. “Thanks to all the volunteers who supported this year’s event as well.”
