HONOLULU, HI — April 25, 2026 — In celebration of American Legion Family Day on Saturday, April 25, 2026, volunteers dedicated their afternoon to uplifting residing veterans at the VA Community Living Center, located within the Spark M. Matsunaga VA Medical Center on the grounds of Tripler Army Medical Center in Honolulu.
The highlight of the afternoon was a highly anticipated series of bingo games, organized and hosted by dedicated American Legion volunteers Mark and Irene DeVirgilio, Barrett Emenheiser and CR Drumheller. The event transformed the center with friendly banter, excitement and an infectious joy that resonated with everyone present. The lively atmosphere even caught the attention of the center’s resident parrots and parakeets, who added their own vocal excitement to the festivities.
Veterans enjoyed competing for a variety of rewards. Among the favorite prizes were Hawaiian-style pillowcases, which cleverly doubled as carrying bags for the veterans to transport their considerable winnings back to their rooms. Showcasing the true spirit of camaraderie the event aimed to foster, one veteran who won multiple rounds generously distributed his extra prizes to fellow residents who were unable to attend the gathering.
"American Legion Family Day Bingo brought immense happiness and connection," noted Drumheller, Department of Hawaii National Executive Committeeman. "It was an afternoon full of banter, excitement and infectious joy."
The event successfully highlighted The American Legion's ongoing commitment to fostering community, supporting local veterans, and bringing meaningful connections to those residing in VA medical facilities.
